After surviving three bouts of cancer in recent years, it is only in Calhoun’s character to have finished the race strong.

“While I appreciate all the support and concern, I assure everyone I am doing very well and I am happy that I was able to complete the course in support of the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center,” he says. “The event was successful in raising awareness and support to fight this disease for a third year in a row, and that is something we can be really proud of.”

More than 300 participated in the 2009 NBC 30-Jim Calhoun Cancer Challenge Ride, presented by CIGNA and the law firm of Riscassi and Davis, which raises funds for the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at the UConn Health Center.

Proceeds from the 2009 ride will also benefit Coaches vs. Cancer, a program of the American Cancer Society. This year’s event is expected to raise more than $250,000. Fundraising continues through August 29, 2009.

Beginning and ending at the Performance Arts Center at Simsbury Meadows, cyclists were able to choose from 10-, 25- or 50-mile courses along the hills and rivers of northern Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Volunteers coordinated live music by the band Steppin’ Out and a summer-style BBQ, making it an exciting day for participants as they completed their races.

Carolyn D. Runowicz, M.D., director of the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center, reiterated the importance of the event to cancer research and treatment at UConn.

“Saturday’s event not only demonstrated the passion and commitment of Coach Calhoun to support the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center at UConn, but also the community’s commitment, as hundreds of riders participated in the event. Events like these help us to further our research and patient care. On behalf of the doctors and researchers at the Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center, I personally want to thank every rider and volunteer for taking part and making the 2009 ride possible."
